As number 1 in sustainable energy supply, EWB is committed to the city of Bern and the surrounding area. The company supplies electricity, water, natural gas and district heating, recycles waste and is the point of contact for all energy issues.
Large companies use many digital components. These include applications, servers, interfaces or end devices. In addition, there are the associated maintenance contracts and the responsible partners and suppliers of the respective components. In order not to lose the overview here, the whole thing has to be documented in a suitable form. EWB uses a self-developed web application with integrated administration database for this purpose.
We were asked to take over the existing and internally developed web application for EWB and to further develop it with our know-how. EWB has outsourced the maintenance & further development to us due to a lack of internal resources. We are responsible for 2nd and 3rd level support and carry out two further developments per year within the framework of defined sprints.
In order to obtain an overview of all components, it is important to document them correctly. All information must be centrally locatable and accessible for the parties involved. An efficient solution for this task is the architecture database in the form of the above-mentioned web application. All relevant data can be recorded, clearly displayed and searched - from the entire range of applications, servers and interfaces used to the associated maintenance contracts and internal and external responsibilities.
The challenge was to read into an existing and extensive application and gain a clear understanding of it. Only in this way is it possible to ensure maintenance and further development.
